What happens at the park gate (and what to bring)
The gate is where most safaris get stuck. Here's exactly how it works, so yours doesn't.
Bring this
Your real passport. Everyone's.
Every foreign visitor has to show their passport at the ticket office, children too. A photo on your phone usually isn't accepted. The office checks passports to decide which ticket price you pay. No passport can mean no entry.
Also good to bring
- Water (it's hot out there)
- A hat, sunglasses and sun cream
- A light jacket for early mornings
- Binoculars and a zoom lens if you have them
- Neutral-coloured clothes: greens, browns and greys
You don't need to bring
- Cash for tickets. You've already paid us, and the driver pays at the counter.
How the ticket office works
You arrive at the gate
Your driver parks and takes your group's details to the counter.
Passports are checked
Staff check passports and write down every visitor. This is done by hand.
The driver pays
Using the money you already paid us. You can ask to see the receipt.
One more check, then you're in
There's a second checkpoint a little way in, then it's elephants time.
About that queue
In August 2026, the Sunday Times newspaper reported what many visitors already knew:
- 500 to 600 jeeps come into Minneriya on busy days
- most of them arrive between 12 noon and 3:30 pm
- there are only two ticket counters, and everything is written by hand
- queues can take up to two hours
- the park now closes at 6 pm, so a long queue eats into the best time

What we do about it
We can't skip the queue. Nobody can, and anyone who says so isn't being straight with you. Tickets are only sold at the gate, on the day.
But we can make your turn at the counter as quick as possible:
- Everything's paid already. No splitting bills or changing money at the window.
- Your group details are ready. We know who's coming and which passports they have.
- We time your pickup to get to the gate before the big afternoon rush.
- We remind you about passports when you book and again the day before.
