If you just want the short answer: come between July and September, and book an afternoon safari. That's when Minneriya has the most elephants.
But lots of people visit Sri Lanka at other times of year, and that's fine. You can still see plenty of elephants. You just might go to a different park. Here's how it works.
Why the time of year matters so much
Elephants follow food and water. In the middle of Minneriya park there's a huge old lake. In the dry months, the water slowly goes down and fresh green grass grows where the water used to be. Elephants love it.
So from about July, elephants from all over the area walk to Minneriya to eat. By August and September, you can see a hundred or more in one place. People call this "the Gathering".
When the rain comes back (usually around October), the lake fills up again, the grass goes under water, and the herds move on.
Month by month
- January to April: Hurulu Eco Park is usually the best bet. Smaller groups, fewer jeeps, a real jungle feel.
- May and June: the herds start coming back to Minneriya. Numbers grow week by week.
- July to September: peak time at Minneriya. This is the Gathering.
- October to December: many elephants move next door to Kaudulla National Park.
Morning or afternoon?
Afternoon, almost always. The elephants spend the hot part of the day in the forest, then walk out onto the grass from around 3 pm. The park closes at 6 pm, so the last few hours are the best.
Mornings are lovely too, cool, calm, and full of birds, but you'll usually see fewer elephants.
One honest warning
Nature doesn't follow a calendar. Some years the rain comes early, some years late. That's why we tell you honestly, before you book, where the herds usually are at that time of year, and we're happy to switch you to another park if it makes more sense.
